To Successfully Complete Your Truck Licence
You Must Be Able To Demonstrate The Following Skills
To obtain a truck licence the candidate must:
- Anticipate and monitor traffic hazards and take appropriate action
- Apply precautions and the required action to eliminate, minimise or control identified hazards
- Be able to apply relevant procedures that reflect legislative requirements
- Communicate effectively with others
- Negotiate a range of complex traffic infrastructure (such as roundabouts, traffic lights, stalemate intersections, railway level crossings)
- Read and interpret the relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
Carrying out pre-operational vehicle checks including:
- Check and top up fluid levels
- Being able to check your brakes
- Checking the operation of vehicle lights and indicators
- Monitoring and checking tyre pressures
- Doing a visual check of the vehicle
Correct handling of the vehicle including:
- Accelerating and braking your vehicle
- Managing engine performance
- the operating of vehicle controls, instruments and indicators
- Positioning and stopping a vehicle
- Reversing a vehicle
- Starting a vehicle
- Steering and manoeuvring a vehicle
- Using defensive driving techniques
A Truck Licence Means More Opportunities

- Driving hazards and related defensive driving techniques

Skills and Knowledge Required
To complete a Truck Licence Course
Drive a light, medium or heavy rigid vehicle
- A light, medium or heavy rigid vehicle is started, steered, manoeuvred, positioned and stopped in accordance with traffic regulations, manufacturer instructions and relevant vehicle handling procedures
- Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency and performance, and to minimise engine and transmission damage
- Braking system of a light, medium or heavy rigid vehicle is managed and operated efficiently to ensure effective control of vehicle under all conditions
- Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated and avoided or controlled through defensive driving
- A light, medium or heavy rigid vehicle is driven in reverse, maintaining visibility and achieving accurate positioning
- A light, medium or heavy rigid vehicle is parked, shutdown and safely secured in accordance with traffic regulations
- The load is safely and effectively restrained
Monitor traffic and road conditions
- Traffic and road conditions are constantly monitored and acted on to enable safe operation and to ensure no injury to people or damage to property, equipment, loads and facilities
- Interaction with other road users is conducted courteously in accordance with road rules to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow
Monitor and maintain vehicle performance
- Vehicle performance is maintained through pre-operational inspections and vehicle checks
- Appropriate signage, lights and equipment are checked for operational effectiveness and for conformity to prescribed traffic regulations

Light Rigid Licence - Truck or Bus
The light rigid licence is designed to improve your driving skills and knowledge. This training course is for a truck or 22 seater bus licence.

MR Licence
The MR Licence course has been custom designed to develop vital driving skills and knowledge necessary to successfully gaining your medium rigid licence.

HR Licence - Auto, Sync & Non Sync
The heavy rigid course has been custom designed to develop vital driving skills and knowledge necessary to successfully gaining your HR licence.

Heavy Combination Truck Licence
This course has been designed with the serious truck driver in mind. Your driving skills and knowledge will be tested to successfully gain your HC licence.
Further Information
All applicants will be required to complete VicRoads paperwork and complete an eyesight test.
Applicants on medication may require a medical clearance from VicRoads.
Clearance from VicRoads is required prior to the commencement of all training and assessment.
All applicants are encouraged to purchase a copy of the ‘Victorian Bus and Truck Drivers Handbook’ in order to complete their knowledge assessment, this can be purchased through COVE Training for $15 OR a PDF version can be downloaded here.
All applicants are required to sit and successfully pass the VicRoads knowledge assessment prior to any training and assessment. Our truck training and testing is conducted from the Seaford office.
Knowledge of how to drive a manual car is a recommended requirement for these licence types.
